My firm is looking to "score" a set of patents in our portfolio and I'd appreciate any comments on which scoring method is the best. Do patent scores really help identify the best patents?

My take has always been to use a "score" to help to separate the stronger patents from the weak, but never use it as an absolute measure

I have always had good luck identifying good patents with a combination of forward cites, backward cites, and looking for broad claims (but not overly broad)

Forward cites are a good way to go, but be careful of excessive internal self citations by certain companies. Some companies are known to massively cite their own internal patents when filing, and this definitely can skew raw counts of forward cites.
If you're looking at Patents360 data, be sure to get the counts for internal versus external cites which can help you understand the effect
